Marine Environment
milieu_marinThe dredging of the port in the deep waters of Vavouto and its fairway, as well as the disposal of dredging equipment in the ocean environment, are issues to which Koniambo Nickel SAS is paying particular attention.

Launched in February 2006, a study on the initial state of the lagoon has led to the installation of a network of sub-marine surveillance stations that served to create an inventory and that will in future serve in the observation and analysis of the impact of activities. These stations are distributed between the immediate environs of the future fairway and further location points that will aid in drawing comparisons.

In addition to the monitoring of physico-chemical parameters, a monitoring of fish populations and their habitat has been put in place, in partnership with a local research organism. In the same view, a monitoring of the mammal and turtle population of the lagoon is equally carried out by over-flying planes.

The information collected in these ways, well before the first construction, provides detailed information on the initial state of the marine environment. This information will provide a reference for evaluating, on a daily basis and at various points inside and outside the lagoon, the effects of the dredging operations, of extraction and of substrate discharge into the ocean.
