 Koniambo Nickel SAS is committed to establishing and maintaining good relationships with the present communities. This commitment will be fulfilled in accordance with sustainable development policies.
Public consultations have been numerous and the conclusions reached have been incorporated into the design criteria of the project, in particular through the environmental management strategy that applies the standards of the World Bank, the European Union and North America.
The closure and rehabilitation plan of the Koniambo complex takes into account the security of riverside residents, basic environmental conditions, current land and water usage, values associated with the environment and the existing guiding principles in this area on the local and international scale. The plan also covers ground contamination, the removal or sale of structures, the transfer of major infrastructures to the surrounding communities as well as the removal or recycling of waste.
All businesses associated with the project must conform to contractual environmental performance objectives. Each contractor will be obliged to acquire licenses and charters specified in the field proceedings and required under the regulation adopted by the Northern Province, New Caledonia and France. They must also prepare an Environment, Health and Safety plan to be reviewed and approved by the Project before commencing work on-site.
Evidently superior environmental performance is a deciding factor in the selection of contractors.
