The North Plant: a Modern Industrial Complex
|
Koniambo Nickel SAS is the industrial operator in charge of constructing the Vavouto metallurgical plant in the Northern Province of New Caledonia, whose production capacity will be 176,000 tonnes of ferronickel (60,000 tonnes of nickel in ferronickel) per year.
This vast and ambitious project aims to utilise the resources of the Koniambo Massif, which contains 150 million tonnes of ore reserves, transforming it on-site and thus contributing to the economic development anticipated in the area.
Supported by the country’s working population in order to ensure the economic rebalancing between the Northern Province and the urban pole of Grand Nouméa (Noumea and its surrounding areas), the North Plant represents a major stake for both the global stainless steel industry and the population of New Caledonia.
The industrial complex will be safely run and activated towards the end of 2011 in compliance with the most recent environmental standards.
To ensure a wholesome and integrated development in line with community and cultural values, numerous public consultations have been held in recent years. Information collected in this manner has shaped the design framework of the project.
As an employer involved in economic development, the creation of industry positions for New Caledonian men and women is a top priority for Koniambo Nickel SAS. The plant will generate, from its outset, approximately 870 direct employments and over 2,500 inferred employments.
As the first metallurgical plant in the region, Koniambo Nickel SAS constitutes a profitable operation and should become a source of pride for it’s promoters, its employees and all those associated with the project.
