Biodiversity

oiseauThe biodiversity of flora and fauna in New Caledonia is exceptional. With more than 2,000 species of fish recorded in the waters, the country is the third most diversified in the Indo-Pacific region. And on land, almost 80% of the plant and animal species are endemic.

Significant inventory work has been conducted on the future industrial site and its surrounding areas, in order to establish a detailed picture of this natural environment so as to be able to detect any modifications and allow the company to immediately put in place attenuating measures.

The studies have dealt with mammals (bats or ‘roussettes’), reptiles, birds and fish. Maps showing the present populations in the zone have been made and a monitoring of the populations put in place.

A detailed botanical inventory, validated by several scientific bodies, has also been made and has led to the definition of protected areas. Zones populated by rare species are thus marked and monitored in order to diminish the impact of the works and optimise preservation measures.
